Chapter Thirteen

Randi

The baby blanket was soft and warm as I folded it and added it on the pile. Today I was at Simone’s house helping her with wedding and baby tasks. How she handled both without stressing, surprised me.

I picked up the next blanket and sniffed it. Babies were amazing little creatures. They brought surprise when learned about, then anticipation and anxiety and once they arrived, doubt, intimidation, and so much love.

“Hey, are you going to fold that or sniff the fabric off it?” Simone asked.

“It smells so good,” I replied, and took one last sniff. “It’ll smell even better when your baby is wrapped in it. I love the way babies smell.”

Simone took more clothes from the dryer. “I’m a little nervous. I’ve been around family with babies but I’ve never babysat any. I hope I can do this mothering thing.”

“Good part about is you won’t be going at it alone. You have Gio and a network of friends, from what I’ve seen.”

“He’s so excited. Did I tell you he has experience with a baby, since he’s a proud godfather?”

“Declan mentioned Gio had a godchild. She sounds sweet.”

“Libby is adorable. She is the daughter of Brad and Harper; they are friends of ours. Their daughter is now six years old, and Gio has been a constant presence in her life since birth.”

“Your man is amazing, Simone. You’ll be fine with him by your side. Plus you are strong and sure of everything you do. I’m jealous.”

“Let’s take a break and have a snack. I made a salad and sandwiches for us.”

I followed Simone to the kitchen. She looked dead tired as she took food from the fridge.

“Let me do that for you. You should sit and rest.” I took the platters of food and placed them on the counter, then parked her on a stool. “Now sit.”

“I’m not an invalid, Randi.”

“You’ve been on your feet all day and carrying a baby that’ll probably be big, considering the size of Gio. Where are the plates?” She pointed to the cabinet, and I took two plates and two glasses down for water.

“I’m mentally preparing myself to deliver a big baby. Iced tea is in the fridge,” she said.

After the food was plated and the tea poured, I sat on the stool next to her. “Does Gio worry you aren’t eating or getting enough rest?”

She rolled her eyes. “All the time. He wants me to stop going to the office, too. I have a ways to go yet.”

“My sister Clara is pregnant with her first child. I bet her husband is doting on her, and my mom is there too. She’s already a diva, and the doting and feet kissing will only add to her spoiled ways. God help us if Aurora has a baby—her husband will do the same but be twice as bad.”

Simone’s nose crinkled. “Do you not get along with your sisters? I’m detecting a little bitterness in your tone.”

That was exactly what she’d heard, but I wouldn’t air my family drama to her.
